Apparently You Call This A Dogwood Winter

I was having a conversation with someone recently about how annoying it is when you think spring temperatures have arrived to stay and suddenly it gets cold again. I call that an irritation, but apparently there were terms for this kind of thing in years gone by and I think this may well be a Dogwood Winter. A Dogwood Winter is when the temperatures drop after the dogwood trees have started to bloom. There are also Blackberry Winters and Linen Britches Winters. Apparently that's when it gets cold after you have already pulled out your linen britches (because who on earth doesn't own a pair of those?)

I had never heard of any of those terms, but when I asked my grandmother about it she told me she had. Who knew? I guess you learn something new everyday.
